Clean up project at Old Bear Creek Slave Cemetery planned in Irving

A Black History Month celebration is planned at Old Bear Creek Slave Cemetery the “Shelton’s Bear Creek Cemetery.” Local officials and community members plan to clean up the historical marker at a rededication service. Located on corner of Hardrock Rd. and Pioneer Dr. (off Esters and Hwy 183) the event is scheduled for February 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participants include Irving City Councilman, District 3, Alan Meagher with the City of Irving Parks and Recreation Dept. as they partner with Bear Creek Community Church and Pastor, Dennis Webb, Big Dogs Youth Orgaization, led by IISD School Board Member, AD Jenkins, Glory Temple Holiness Church, West Irving Improvement Association and many others who care about the preservation of the Black History in Bear Creek.

Irving Mayor Herb Gears will work with the community leaders and volunteers to clean up the Cemetery and to replace and rededicate the Historical Marker along newly completed Hwy 161 which borders the Cemetery on the west side. A hotdog cookout will follow clean up.
