Gazette Gossip: Perry to Spike: ‘Go straight to hell’

The last thing I like to see is two prominent black movie makers dismissing one another. There is enough negative press about black folk going around already. Now, Tyler Perry is speaking about director Spike Lee’s blatant comments about his Madea movies.

According to Young, Black and Famous.com, during an April 20 press conference for Perry’s movie, Madea’s Big Happy Family, a reporter (I hope it was not a black one) recently asked Perry about the comments Lee made about the quality of Perry’s movies. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee. Spike can go straight to hell!  I am sick of him talking about me. I am sick of him saying, ‘This is a coon, this is a buffoon.’ I am sick of him talking about black people going to see movies. This is what he said: ‘You vote by what you see’ — as if black people don’t know what they want to see.

“I am sick of him. He talked about Whoopi, he talked about Oprah, he talked about me, he talked about Clint Eastwood. Spike needs to shut the hell up!”

Wow! I agree with Perry on that note. There are times when Lee talks too much. I know Lee has a right to his own opinion, but maybe Lee should not knock Perry because he has struck gold in the black comedy genre. I will watch a Madea movie before Soul Plane. Perry’s movies lack black stereotypes – just a lot of truth about black people. Lee knows he can relate to Madea just as much as he can Malcolm X. Part of me wants to disbelieve that the words spewed out of Lee’s mouth are not of a jealous man.
