Summer camps for kids at DCCCD

DALLAS – School’s out for summer. So what’s next? Several colleges in the Dallas County Community College District’s system are offering the perfect solutions to those summertime needs for camp, classes and fun.

Brookhaven College

Summer camp at Brookhaven College includes courses that are designed to meet the needs of children ages 5 to 17. Offerings include classes in animation, cooking and culinary arts, creative writing, drawing and sculpture, weaving, candle making, rain forest fun, fashion design, junior entrepreneurship, music (vocal and instrumental), personal enrichment, photography, science, self-defense, theater and acting, visual communications and SAT preparation. Cedar Valley College

Learning doesn’t stop because it’s summertime at Cedar Valley College. CVC’s “Fun While Learning” program offers classes in reading, science, writing, art, cooking, dance, theater, music, mathematics, technology and sports in June and July for children and youths, ages 6 to 17. A special four-week “Hot Bot” auto technology course will be offered in July that involves remote-controlled cars; the program helps participants learn to develop critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and “green” awareness as they design, build and race a working car model. Eastfield College

Arts and academic camps – Children can be Olympic swimmers, rock stars or famous actors and artists — with help from Eastfield College. Classes are offered in guitar and piano; private guitar lessons also are available. Mathematics reviews for youngsters in different grades in for Algebra I and Calculus are scheduled. Rockin’ the Arts Camp – Youngsters ages 5 to 14 will enjoy a two-week camp that focuses on art and drama inspired by rock music. The new summer camp will be held June 7-21, 2013, at Eastfield. For more information, send questions to irisbechtol@dcccd.edu or dreasons@dcccd.edu.

 

Mountain View College

Academic Camps – Mountain View College will offer three-week, half-day academic camps in read, writing and mathematics for children in grades 1 through 7 from June 10-27 and July 15 to Aug. 1. Other sessions for “Lego Logo,” “Lego Mania,” “Fashion Designer,” “Camp Barbie” and “Jumpstart Kindergarten” are scheduled Aug. 5-8. Two-week blocks for swimming classes will be offered throughout the summer for people of all ages – from water babies to adults – beginning June 10. Sports/fitness camps that include basketball, soccer, volleyball (and football, tentatively), gymnastics and tumbling are available all summer as well.

STEM Exploration Program – Mountain View College is offering a new STEM Exploration program this summer, specifically for high school students who have just completed either 10th or 11th grade. Students can choose one of two tracks: robotics or engineering. Tuition is free but enrollment is limited; lunch also is provided. The program will include hands-on problem solving, field trips and laboratory experiences from June 18-July 23, Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

North Lake College

Kids Camp – The North Lake College Kids Camp, scheduled Monday through Friday during the weeks of June 3-28, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for youngsters ages 6 to 12. (Free drop-off begins at 7:30 a.m.) Camp classes include “Leadership Games for Kids,” “Fitness and Health,” “Computer Games,” “Tricks with Math,” “Crazy/Fun with Science” and “Awesome Art Projects.” The cost is $150 per week. Richland College

Robots-4-U Camp – Richland College again will host three sessions of the Robots-4-U summer day camp. Younsters ages 7 to 17 will learn about science, problem solving, teamwork and technological skills as they build robots. Robots-4-U provides girls and boys with a hands-on learning experience from beginner to master levels. Tuition for the five-day camp is $399.95 per camper. Robots-4-U is offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the weeks of June 10-14, July 22-26 and Aug. 12-16. Participants need to bring their own lunch. Class size is limited. STEM Camp – Richland’s STEM Camp is offered to students ages 13-18 who are interested in STEM career paths. Enrollment is limited to 100 students, who must be U.S. citizens or documented residents. The three-week camp will be held each Monday through Friday from June 10-28; tuition is $300. The purpose of Richland’s STEM Camp is to provide students with an introduction to the variety of careers and occupations in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
