Mark Mason, originally born at Fort Hood in Killeen Texas, purchased a home during his first year participating in the gig economy.

The gig economy, familiar to folks needing to make a little extra money by side hustles, is now employing professionals and middle and upper class graduates.

Mason, who has been offering copywriting and other business services on the premier gig economy site Fiverr.com, purchased a home before completing his first year as a seller.

“It wasn’t luck since I came to the marketplace with a lot of sales and marketing skills” said Mason who has his MBA in online marketing. “What was lucky was my picking [Fiverr] to offer my services. It’s like lucking into eBay when it was only a few years old.”

Mason, who sells under the name AnarchoFighter, admits many other sites failed. “The hardest thing for any site is getting consistent, reliable visitors.  Fiverr does even better; they get consistent, reliable buyers,” he said.

“With unemployment still near 7 percent in the DFW area, the gig economy makes a lot of sense for young graduates needing to get some experience and repay student loans, as well as, mature workers who’ve been displaced,” said Mason.

Mason, who spends most of his time being an activist for racial and economic justice, indicated that Fiverr lets him set his own schedule.

“Changing the world is my number one priority, but an empty plate feeds no one,” he said of the need to make money as an activist. “When I started, I wanted to supplement my activist lifestyle, I had no idea at the time just how much could be made.”

Mason and other sellers are not limited to $5 sales as gig extras purchases that can total $505. “It adds up when you can deliver in demand services.” Said Mason who’s had single buyer pay as much as $2,000 for a sales letter on an insomnia product by completing multiple $500 purchases.

“I’m now teaching others to use Fiverr as part of the solution for economic justice and world peace because anyone, no matter who they are or where they’re from, can participate in a global marketplace.  And ultimately, when our customers, suppliers, friends and family are everywhere—there’s no desire for war,” he said.
