Dallas City Hall exhibit marks 50th anniversary of JFK assassination

smallDALLAS – An exhibit at Dallas City Hall includes never before seen documents and artifacts relating to the Nov. 22, 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The free exhibit on the second floor at City Hall will be open to the public through Dec. 9. The historical information to be displayed is housed in the Dallas Municipal Archives division of the City Secretary’s Office.

Code Three: Selections from the John F. Kennedy/Dallas Police Department Collection includes police procedural records regarding the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald and the arrest of Oswald’s murderer, nightclub owner Jack Ruby, as well as the investigation of the murder of Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit, also murdered by Oswald.

The City Hall exhibit also marks the unveiling of more than 11,000 fully digitized Dallas Police documents by the University of North Texas (UNT) for inclusion on UNT’s statewide digital library. A $20,000 TexTreasures Grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission enabled the university to digitize Dallas Municipal Archive records and rare documents and photographs held by the Sixth Floor Museum. A brief public event to open the new digital collection will be held at noon Nov. 20 in the exhibit area, and will include remarks by former Dallas Mayor and KRLD reporter Wes Wise.

First-day evidence photography, fingerprints and mug shots, hand-annotated eyewitness affidavits, and artifacts can also be seen in the exhibit, which provides a rare look at the events of 50 years ago this month.

City Archivist John Slate said the City is delighted to partner again with UNT to make the investigation documents available and “to preserve the originals and promote the use of primary source materials in research. This collection has finally reached an unparalleled level of access,” he said.

City Secretary Rosa A. Rios said she is proud of the collection maintained by the City of Dallas and invited the public to visit the exhibit and the UNT website, http://texashistory.unt.edu/
