Plano issues warning regarding street conditions

Plano_Texas_USA_sealStatement from City of Plano regarding street conditions:

The City of Plano has five sanding crews out at the current time and are fitting 4 more vehicles with sanders for activation.  We are hitting some of the normal problematic hills where inclines are steep and some intersections are becoming snow packed and slick.

We are noticing the biggest problems are coming from motorists traveling at an excessive speed for the conditions given.

We will re-evaluate at noon and make decisions as to future plans depending on the status of the snowfall and other factors.

The NWS is reporting several bands coming through North Texas, including Collin County and Plano could produce another half inch to an inch of snow.  The great majority of the snow should be over by 2 pm or earlier.  Additional accumulations should be 1/4″ or less.  However, the snow is obviously getting packed into ice – particularly at intersections and on some streets where the traffic is greater. It’s unlikely that the street conditions will get worse than they are now.  However, even with the snow ending this afternoon, there will likely still be some icy conditions persisting on the streets through this afternoon, and likely overnight as well.  Temperatures will remain well below freezing, so the only way we’re going to lose the snow (and ice) is through evaporation/sublimation during the next 12-18 hours.  I assume continued traffic will wear it down a bit as well
