Murphy’s annual Clean & Green Trash and Recycling Event is scheduled for April 5

recycleMURPHY — The annual Clean & Green Trash and Recycling Event, the yearly Don’t Mess with Texas (DMWT) Trash-off Clean-up and the curbside pickup of electronic items and household hazardous waste are all converging on April 5, making for an excellent opportunity to shake off the winter doldrums, says Candy McQuiston, Customer Service Manager.

“Whether you’re cleaning out your garage, or volunteering to help clean up Maxwell Creek, your participation in one of these events is a symbolic welcome to spring,” she said. “Shaking off the winter blues by helping clean up Maxwell Creek, or just getting all the clutter out of the house or garage is a way to get ready for the renewal of spring.”

The Clean & Green Trash and Recycling Event gets underway at 9 a.m. on April 5 at the City of Murphy Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road. The City Hall driveway and a portion of the parking area will be converted into a drive-through recycle event to drop-off electronics, batteries, brush, used building materials as well as other items.

Document shredding will also be available onsite. For a full list of collectible items, visit www.murphytx.org.

“We’ve partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Collin County where they will get any usable lumber or building materials that we get,” she said. “Also, clothing or school supplies, backpacks and such will be passed along to the Murphy Middle School Environmental Club for recycling.”

The event will occur rain or shine, and will close at noon. Progressive Waste Solutions will display the recycling truck that was recently wrapped with the winning entries in the Keep Murphy Beautiful poster and recycling super hero contest.

Volunteers can register to assist in the DMWT Trash-off by visiting http://www.murphytx.org/index.aspx?NID=487.

Finally, Progressive Waste Solutions will send out trucks on the morning of April 5 to Murphy residences that call ahead and get on the pickup schedule. Electronic waste and household hazardous waste, such as solvents, cleaning agents, wet paint, fertilizers, acids and other items which should never be dumped into drains will be picked up at no charge.

Residents with these items must call 469-452-8000 to get on the schedule. Simply placing the items on the curb will not guarantee that they will get collected. A call or an e-mail message to: murphy@progressivewaste.com will ensure that trucks arrive. Deadline to get on the schedule is 4 p.m., April 4.

“Shaking off the winter blues can be as simple as devoting some time and effort on April 5,” she said. “We hope to see lots of activity on that day.”
