How to get away with the Black Woman’s Self-Esteem

How to Get Away with Murder television show episode titled ‘Freakin’ Whack-a-Mole commentary’

Did ABC have you on the edge of your seat waiting to hear the much-hyped Annalise’s “last nine words” two weeks ago on How to Get Away with Murder? I most certainly was, but I bet you’ll never guess which words stuck out to me the most last week.

“Even though you have lied to me and have had numerous affairs I STILL NEED YOU! This is how Annalise a polished, highly intelligent, income-generating sister, responds to her unfaithful husband. Tears rolled down her face because even her brilliant legal mind, could not explain why despite everything her husband has done, her “need” still exists.

Sadly, this is not fiction. Many of us suffer from low self-esteem in private while we live another way in public. Defending our oppressors every step of the way offering countless excuses to our peers, afraid they will be the jury that judges us!

Even I have been found guilty of such foolishness!

Know that you are not alone! You are among a jury of your peers! You just need to speak up and tell your story! Just as Annalise, the public defender character must defend her clients by any means necessary, we must learn to do the same and defend ourselves in public, not private.

We stay in bad relationships, and we stay registered with political parties that DO NOTHING about black women having the highest unemployment rate in the country. Nothing is being done about the unfair wage disparity between black and white women. Nor is anything being done about the high rate of HIV in the black community, the staggering number of broken homes, the lack of anything better than a dead end job, even for the college educated. To top it all off black women are sent to prison more than any other women (often as a result of a man) yet the only thing we worry about is who KILLED Annalise’s cheating husband Sam?!

The question we should be asking is WHO IN THE HELL KILLED OUR SELF-ESTEEM?

Since the show has seemed to grab the attention of the black woman, then I must use the show to create political messages in an effort to get you to look past what you see on television screen and get you to see the BIG picture in real life!
