Free HIV and STD testing offered today by DCHHS

AIDSribbon1With the theme, “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation,” healthcare leaders, professionals, and advocates around the world unite on World AIDS Day 2014 to raise awareness about AIDS and Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is on board. DCHHS health officials are urging Dallas County residents to take advantage of a free opportunity to get tested for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

In 2012, 780 people were diagnosed with HIV or AIDS in Dallas County and more than 14,000 were living with either disease.

“Our goal is to empower citizens to get tested for HIV so they know their status and get educated about prevention and treatment, and also help eliminate stigma associated with the epidemic,” said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS director. “Outreach events are a great way for us to show our presence in the community and let Dallas County residents know about our services.”

In addition to free HIV testing, DCHHS will offer testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis at no cost as well on Monday, Dec. 1, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following location:

Big T Bazaar

4515 Village Fair Dr.

Dallas, Texas 75224

Everyone who gets tested will also receive one free ticket to Kwanzaa Fest 2014 on Dec. 13 and 14, 2014.

“Knowing your HIV status puts you in charge of your long-term health,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS medical director/health authority. “Early intervention and treatment coupled with a healthy lifestyle is proven to be effective for managing HIV.”

More information about HIV testing and early intervention can be found on the DCHHS website.
