WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative G. K. Butterfield (NC-01), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), issued the following statement in response to charges filed against the six Baltimore, Maryland police officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray:

“The applauds the swift and decisive actions by the Baltimore City State’s Attorney in conducting a thorough and independent investigation of the events surrounding the death of Freddie Gray.

“This is the first of many steps to begin the process of mending the fractured relationship between law enforcement and the people of the City of Baltimore.  Every citizen has a right to due process of law, and we are pleased to see the legal system is working. We continue to call for calm in the weeks and months ahead as we await the outcome of these cases.”

  1. Somebody needs to come up to the bar and call it like it is on behalf of the Baltimore City States Attorney. Far too many prosecutors are in the pockets of the police. Most are just plain scared when it comes to saying anything against the police. She was not afraid. She had ample evidence that the police were wrong and she spoke out about it – for the people who elected her. She is a hero!!!

  2. Indeed – of course now she better watch her back because they are going to do their best to punish her.
