Dallas immigrant families facing discrimination to address City Council at today’s council meeting, prepare to file fair housing complaint.
This morning, families at Bellmar Apartments who are being pressured out of their homes because of new requirements that target their undocumented status will be joined by community supporters in stating their concerns in front of Dallas City Council at today’s council meeting.
For months, these longtime residents who have tried to renew their rental agreements have been required to provide a U.S. ID, identification previously not required. Residents who can’t produce those documents are then pressured to sign a resident’s document expressing intent to move out.
“Make no mistake, Knightvest Management’s policy asking for a U.S. ID is a willful attempt to screen and identify undocumented immigrants as undesirable tenants. Knightvest has no reason for doing this to these families,” said Brianna Brown, Dallas County director of the Texas Organizing Project. “TOP and our partners at the North Texas Fair Housing Center are preparing a formal fair housing complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.”
