Is it just me or is there a revival on entertainment from my teen years? It’s like Hollywood can no longer make anything that is remotely original. Movies are now remakes of Marvel comics, summer reading lists, and old television shows. This brings us to the new movie “21 Jump Street with Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube based on the T.V. show that produced stars like Johnny Depp.
The popular television drama centered on a bunch of rag tag cops going undercover in an inner city high school. The movie has the same premise but with a comedic twist.
A much thinner Jonah Hill plays Schmidt, the smart good guy that all girls love to have as a friend. And Channing Tatum plays Jenko, the dumb eye candy that all girls love to have as more than a friend.
Schmidt and Jenko are the stereotypical enemies that every teen movie seems to have. But they become bosom buddies at the Police Academy.
After being assigned to “21 Jump Street” because they have baby faces; Schmidt and Jenko discover that things have changed since they left high school. Now the cool crowd is a bunch of politically correct, environmentally conscious, new age hippies.
Schmidt finds himself quickly accepted with the cool crowd and Jenko finds himself blowing up things with the AP Chemistry kids.
And comedy gold ensues as the two navigate their new social scene and try to find the supplier of a new synthetic drug before it kills another kid.
21 Jump Street is surprisingly funny. You will find yourself in stiches ashamed that you are laughing at some of the raunchy jokes. I left the theatre asking “Korean Jesus” for forgiveness “the end”. Jonah Hill is the new Vince Vaughn and Channing Tatum plays dumb a little too well. Ice Cube “embraces” the angry Black police captain and squeezes it for all the laughs he can possibly get from every scene he appears. Johnny Depp has a cameo role that is sure to make you die laughing. This movie is worth the trip down memory lane and will surely become the new remake that turns into a franchise. 21 Jump Street opens in theatre Friday, March 16, 2012.
