Dallas Children’s Theater presents ANNE OF GREEN GABLES for a limited two-week run and OPENING NIGHT TEA PARTY!

Travel northeast to Prince Edward Island and fall in love with one of literature’s most unforgettable young heroines, the spirited Anne Shirley. Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT) presents the perfect way to spend a spring day with ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, playing March 23 through April 1, 2012 at DCT’s Rosewood Center for Family Arts.

Bestselling novel ANNE OF GREEN GABLES by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery was published in 1908 and has sold millions of copies worldwide, capturing the hearts of young and old for generations.Adapted for the stage by Seattle Children’s Theater, the play is a faithful dramatization of the beloved book. DCT presented the show in 1993 and is proud to reinvent literature’s most loveable dreamer and her search for a home.

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is a classic example of an experience that can be enjoyed by children as well as adults. Montgomery intended the book for readers of all ages, and its themes of family and kindred spirits are universal. It is a perfect fit for DCT’s mission to inspire young people to lead productive, imaginative lives. “I love this story because it appeals to a multigenerational audience, and that has always been my guide for choosing material for DCT,” says Robyn Flatt, DCT’s Executive Artistic Director, founder and director of the play.

She continues, “Montgomery had a very isolated, lonely childhood which resulted in a vivid inner life and an intense need for family and close friends. She wrote Anne based on her own childhood experiences, and every age can relate to the need for love and true acceptance.”

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is a heartwarming and unforgettable shared family experience.

Another theme in the story is the conflict between imagination and social expectations. Anne acts according to her instincts, and lives in daydreams and fantasy. Much of the humor of the play occurs when Anne unknowingly defies social graces, manners and ladylike behavior.

The Victorian age is waning and with it many traditions, particularly for girls and women. Marilla represents the past, while Anne’s ambition and originality symbolize the dawn of a fresh, new era.

In the quiet Canadian town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island is Green Gables, the ancestral farm of unmarried siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. When they request an orphan boy to help on the farm, they receive the vivacious, redheaded Anne Shirley by mistake. Anne’s talkativeness and flare for the melodramatic immediately enchants Matthew, but Marilla only reluctantly decides to give Anne a try.

The tribulations Marilla fears come to pass as Anne insults Marilla’s best friend, “loses” Marilla’s most cherished brooch, smacks the school’s prize pupil with a slate, and inadvertently gets her best friend Diana drunk on cherry cordial. She also turns out to be extremely bright, charming, resourceful and bursting with irrepressible creativity and passion. Marilla and Matthew realize she is the best thing that has ever happened to them, and Anne comes to understand that she is a truly loved and cherished person.

Randel Wright’s set design captures the nature motifs in the book, accentuating the lush beauty of “the Island” and creating the pastoral heaven Anne describes in her flowery, dramatic fashion.  Costume design by Barbara Cox draws inspiration from countryside living in the late Victorian era with a few Gibson Girl elements that Anne so admires.

Dallas 2010 Auto Show has a Green Theme

(NDG Wire) It seems like everyone is trying to live a more earth-friendly lifestyle these days, and the 2010 Dallas Auto Show is joining the crusade March 3-7 at the Dallas Convention Center.

“Consumers have made small changes in their day-to-day activities to help reduce their carbon footprints by lowering the thermostat, recycling, and skipping bottled water. And ‘going green’ without a doubt extends to automobiles; following the speed limit, keeping tires properly inflated, getting regular tune-ups and, of course, purchasing hybrids, or vehicles with clean diesel engines and higher mpg ratings,” said Don Herring, Jr., 2010 Dallas Auto Show chairman.

Ever since the first hybrid was sold in North America in 1999, more and more manufacturers have introduced hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles to their lineups. And hybrids aren’t just limited to compact cars any more. Manufacturers are listening to the needs of all consumers and producing more fuel-efficient sedans, pickups and SUVs. And this year, auto enthusiasts are guaranteed to see even more of these vehicles than ever before during the five days of the 2010 Dallas Auto Show, Herring said.

Some of the 2010 green vehicles on tap to be at the Show include: the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the redesigned Honda Insight, the Mercedes Benz S400 hybrid sedan, the Mercury Milan Hybrid, Mitsubishi iMiev all electric vehicle, the Subaru Legacy Sedan PZEV, the third-generation Toyota Prius, and the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Golf TDI.

This year, the Dallas Auto Show also is proud to present a special “green” area dedicated to environmentally-friendly products and services. The City of Dallas will distribute information about air quality, phone recycling and water conservation. Stormwater Management will educate consumers on how to keep pollution out of area creeks and lakes.

Texas Discovery Gardens will have a live native butterfly display and discuss organic gardening. In addition, there will be eco-minded local artists selling their wares such as beads made from recycled paper, beeswax candles and organic clothing, a “green” plumbing company, and a variety of other exhibitors. The Allied Exhibit Area also will be extended to include other products and services outside the Show’s typical automotive-related companies.

“This is going to be a great opportunity for Dallas Auto Show attendees to visit with a variety of businesses that can show them the way to a more ‘green’ lifestyle. There also will be some great shopping involved,” Herring added.

The 2010 Dallas Auto Show also will feature the Southwest Automotive Aftermarket Show, which is designed to bring together car dealers, consumers and automotive aftermarket companies, and the Toyota Behind the Wheel Adventure.

Operation KidSafe, a child security/identification system sponsored by Univision, will take children’s pictures and capture their fingerprints with the only record of the visit going home with the family. On Saturday and Sunday,  6 and 7,

Univision will be on location along with an expert to discuss the safe installation of children’s car safety seats. A total of twenty certified safety seats also will be given away during the presentations.

In addition, classic car enthusiasts will enjoy displays by Corvette Legends, Lone Star Corvette Club,North Texas Mustang Club and Z Car Club.

Hours of the show are: 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 3 and 4; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, March 5; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 6; and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 7.
