Kevin Landis, age 19, sits on death row for a murder he did not commit. Or did he? Laura Enders, a graduate student in psychology is writing her doctorate dissertation on the characteristics of the young criminal mind. Her objective is to find behavioral markers for the early detection of criminality—a litmus test for sociopathy. She obtains permission from the prison warden to study Kevin. In an attempt to formulate an extensive psychological profile, she interviews Kevin in depth and over an extended period of time. She also takes statements from his girlfriend, his priest, his family, and his best friend. The story takes a ominous turn when Laura loses all professional objectivity and bonds emotionally with Kevin. Convinced of Kevin’s innocence, Laura sets out to win a new trial for him, and to write a book hoping to sway public opinion against the death penalty.

Evening Star Rising avoids the hackneyed arguments pro and con of this politically sensitive issue. Instead, this story puts a human face on the condemned. The viewers are invited to draw their own conclusions about Kevin, whose proof of guilt, as Laura discovers, falls short of the legal standard for conviction: guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Cast Requirements: All roles are open. No appointment necessary. There are no cost to audition or fees to be in our shows.

Age Range 19 and older. A stipend will be paid to all actors regardless of age.

LAURA ENDERS, age range 24-30, a graduate student in psychology. Attractive, educated, well-spoken, sophisticated, sensitive. Potentially, a rising star in the profession of criminal psychology.

KEVIN LANDIS, actual character age 19, a convicted murderer. A recent graduate from high school, good looking, unusually bright, sensitive, a freshman and English major in college, loves poetry, writes haiku. Could be slightly boyish in appearance. Easily evokes sympathy. The kind of kid that girls his age and their moms instantly want to hug. Counter casting: away from the stereotypical sociopathic killer.

RICHARD DANIELS, age range 18-21, the ex-roommate of Kevin. Gruff, insensitive, a jock, impulsive, outspoken, in college on a football scholarship but is no scholar.

JENNIFER CARTER, age range 19-21, Kevin’s girlfriend. Immature, self-absorbed, opinionated and flighty but means well. College student with a C average.

DAREN MOORE, age 27, fiance of Laura. Graduate student in chemistry. Smart, caring, in love with Laura. A no-nonsense guy, although sensitive and insightful.

FATHER MACK, age 45+, Kevin’s priest all Kevin’s life. Baptized him. Convinced of Kevin’s innocence. A loving man who extends himself emotionally to Kevin and Laura.

DOCTOR SYLVIA CARLYLE, age range 30 plus, Laura’s faculty advisor. Tough, non-forgiving academic type, whose primary goal is to publish, publish, publish. Mostly interested in Laura as a promising vehicle to advance her own career.
