The Black Reel Awards to be announced at MIST Harlem on Feb. 7

(PressKing) For the first time in its 13-year history, The Black Reel Awards will be presented in New York City. The awards presentation will take place on February 7 at MIST Harlem the Foundation for the Advancement of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF) announced. MIST Harlem is the country’s first completely minority-owned converged entertainment center to consist of a three screen digital cinema, live performance venue and restaurant combined. Dubbed “Harlem’s living room” MIST Harlem is a venue where emerging and established Black and Latino filmmakers, actors, and musicians from around the world will have a new home for their creativity.

“We are excited about our partnership with MIST Harlem and the ability to expand our awards presentation into the Nation’s largest media market,” said Tim Gordon, president of FAAAF. “We are thrilled to be associated with this innovative arts center that is creating an updated Harlem Renaissance in the 21st century and relish the partnership to host our celebration of African-American film achievement at their wonderful facility.”

The Black Reel Awards annually select and spotlight films and performances featuring African-Americans, as well as people of color throughout the African diaspora. The 13th Annual Black Reel Awards will simultaneously reveal the winners from a live presentation at MIST and on the Black Reel Awards Live Broadcast on BlogTalkRadio. All of this year’s nominees are invited to attend this year’s presentation.

MIST is 100% minority owned and was financed by Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group which also financed the Kalahari Condos.

Nominations for the 2013 Black Reel Awards Outstanding Motion Picture are: Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Flight, The Intouchables and Middle of Nowhere.

Elza – which premiered at MIST Harlem on Nov. 30, 2012 and had a two week run at the cinema – is nominated in two categories: Outstanding Foreign Film and Outstanding Independent Film.

Among the other categories for Outstanding Achievement: Actor and Actress, Supporting Actor and Actress, Director, Screenplay (Adapted or Original), Feature Documentary, Ensemble, Foreign Film, Score, Original or Adapted Song, Breakthrough Performance, Voice Performance, Independent Film, Independent Documentary, Independent Short, and a number of complementary Television awards.
