Cedar Hill ISD Fine Arts students to perform at the Winspear Opera House

CEDAR HILL – More than 800 Cedar Hill Independent School District students will showcase their abilities in fine arts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2012 at the Winspear Opera House, 2403 Flora Street, Dallas, Texas. “CHISD Fine Arts Night at the Winspear” will feature all segments of the Fine Arts Department: orchestra, band, choir, theatre, art, dance and photography. Lobby performances start at 6 p.m. Center stage performances begin at 7 p.m.

One of the evening’s featured soloists will be fourth-grader Parker Abel-Griffin from Bray Elementary. Parker will play an improvised solo using Garage Band on his iPad as the Cedar Hill High School Wind Ensemble accompanies him.

“We want to show how we can integrate technology into our live performances,” explained CHISD Fine Arts Director Ken Peach. “Parker will be performing a blues solo over a fun song called Blues for a Killed Cat with the high school band. In addition, we will have Mr. Kyle Berger, executive director of Technology for CHISD, performing alongside Parker on his iPad.”

The Fine Arts Department also plans to demonstrate a pilot software program called SmartMusic that allows students to have more effective practice sessions. After a child practices, the software has the ability to interpret the performance and give instant feedback on what was right or wrong.

“It’s like having a personal music teacher,” Peach said. “If the student played all the right notes and rhythms, the notes on the music screen turn green; if they played it wrong, they turn red and show you the corrections.”

The district plans to use SmartMusic in the 2013-2014 school year to help supplement the district’s music curriculum. Students will be able to purchase their own software for only $40 for the year if they want to use this at home.

Another highlight of the evening will be the Combined Band, Orchestra and Choirs performances. They will perform two special pieces celebrating music, art, and their love for their parents. One piece, The Awakening by Joseph M. Martin, features slides and video created by Cedar Hill Art students that is choreographed alongside the live music performance.
