Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) — Author, advocate and educator, Dr. Tiffany Simpkins Russell has recently joined an elite club of African American females that have spoken at TEDx events in the United States. TEDx, which began in 2009, is a program that allows independent organizers to host local versions of the hugely popular TED conferences. Possessing more than 15 years of teaching, training and curriculum development experience, the esteemed educator and community fixture is on steadfast mission to promote the power of girl geeks.
On May15, 2013, Dr. Russell delivered a thought-provoking speech aptly titled The Womanist Way: Technology Reimagined, addressing how womanist technology embraces methods that aide in the emotional and physical wellness of women and girls. “52 percent of the world’s population is female,” explains Dr. Russell, “and we represent over half of the workforce, and yet we only hold about a quarter of computing and technical-related jobs” the New Jersey native continues. Dr. Russell’s idea of womanist technology extends the reach of womanism to the masses by bringing current day technology into the fold.
No stranger to the speaking circuit or technology, Dr. Russell has spoken all over the country and wrote her first digital storybook application, A Song for Miles, in June of 2011, which can be found on the Apple AppStore. Currently she is working on Colored Me, a vibrant collection of narratives and essays that bring a fresh angle to the discussion of what it takes to succeed as a woman of color in modern society. In addition, she is also putting the final touches on her next storybook app, Dream, Olivia, Dream, which is discussed in detail and previewed during her TEDxTalk.
