Abbott admits discriminatory action

tdp logoIn response to Attorney General Holder’s actions to protect Texan voters, Greg Abbott has admitted to his defense of discriminatory acts.

In Abbott’s own words (pg. 19):

In 2011, both houses of the Texas Legislature were controlled by large Republican majorities, and their redistricting decisions were designed to increase the Republican Party’s electoral prospects at the expense of the Democrats. It is perfectly constitutional for a Republican-controlled legislature to make partisan districting decisions, even if there are incidental effects on minority voters who support Democratic candidates.

In light of this admission, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa stated:

“Today Abbott admitted to Hispanic and African American Texans that he’s fine with discrimination against them — if they don’t vote for Republicans. The person asking to be the next governor just told almost half of Texans that they shouldn’t have access to equal representation. Generations did not fight for the right to vote, just so Abbott can now take it away. This is partisan politics at its worst, and Texans are fed up with Abbott’s mean spirited mission to discriminate and block equal and fair access to the ballot box.”
