Dawn Neufeld is a guest scheduled to appear at the Urban League of Greater Dallas Young Professionals Mistruths in Reality Forum. The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Pads @ Aloft Dallas Downtown. Panelists will discuss the negative images of women and girls of color in reality television and media. How do those mistruths impact the advancement of women and girls, as well as their views of one another and themselves?

A 2011 survey of girls ages 11 to 17, conducted by the Girl Scouts of America, found that half of the girls watched reality television on a regular basis. Many were surprised to learn 70 percent of the girls watching reality television thought it was okay to be disrespectful to others.

“We are excited to hear from this diverse group of ladies on the varying portrayals of women and girls of color in the media and television,” said Akilah S. Wallace, event creator, Dallas Women’s Foundation staff member, and strategic alliance chair for Urban League of Greater Dallas Young Professionals. “As the studies show, this discussion is relevant to today’s society and our future. Join us in helping to uncover the positive and negative impacts on women’s self-image, professions, families, career advancement and relationships.”

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s that collaboration and strategic partnerships are critical to achieving your goals. No one person and no one organization can cure all that ails our society; rather, it takes everyone working together to truly move the needle towards positive change,” said Roslyn Dawson Thompson, president and CEO of Dallas Women’s Foundation. “Dallas Women’s Foundation could not be more proud to support this event, which is absolutely aligned with our focus on advancing women’s leadership. And we could not be more excited to partner with the young professionals of so many respected organizations in our community – because it truly does take a village to make the changes we all seek.”
