Mesquite Symphony plays for student scholarships

The Mesquite Symphony Orchestra returns to Brookhaven College for a performance in support of music scholarships at the college. The public is invited to support the Brookhaven College School of the Arts at Melodic Magicians Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall with guitar soloist, Rodger Bennett, vice president of academic affairs and student success.

Melodic Magicians showcases the music of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles, Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

Currently the vice president for academic achievement and student success, Bennett also served as the executive dean of the School of the Arts, Athletics, Physical Education and Nutrition for more than 15 years. Prior to that he taught music for more than 20 years at Brookhaven College, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Temple University. He has performed extensively in Mexico, throughout the United States, and in Korea, Canada, England, Ireland, Austria and Romania as a guitar soloist.

Since 2004, the symphony has been performing at the college with faculty members as the featured soloists to support scholarship funds that are awarded to students in the Brookhaven College School of the Arts Music Department.
