The Jubilee Theatre has issued a statement following the arrest last week of their Artistic Director Tre Garrett (when arrested his name was listed as Declois Garrett Beacham). Garrett was charged with two counts of compelling prostitution of a child ages 11 and 17.

“Jubilee Theatre’s Board of Trustees Executive Committee, in emergency session on Sunday, February 1, 2015 placed Artistic Director Tre Garrett on paid administrative leave – effective immediately, pending further developments.

Jubilee Theatre has an excellent administrative staff in place, led by Managing Director Glenda Thompson. During this interim period, Ms. Thompson has also been appointed to manager normal operations of the skilled artistic staff as well.

Performances of the current production- In Real Life continue through March 1. The next production, Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope, will be directed by Akiń Babatundé and runs April 3 through May 3, 2015.

Garrett has been the Artistic Director for Jubilee Theatre since end of the 2011-2012 Season, and has not shown any indication that he would participate in the type of behavior he is accused of. He has done excellent work during his tenure.

Jubilee Theatre has begun its own internal investigation and will take further action as warranted. Outside legal counsel will also be hired to help with this process. Jubilee Theatre strongly believes that Mr. Garrett’s alleged actions are not a reflection of Jubilee Theatre, which has been in operation for 34 years with an ongoing excellent reputation.”
