Norma’s Cafe announced its plans to honor tradition and continue with its annual National Grilled Cheese Day celebration on April 12. Given current restrictions placed on restaurants, Norma’s is taking festivities online and encouraging customers to create and submit their ideal grilled cheese sandwich recipe from home. The lucky contest winner will receive free grilled cheese sandwiches for a year as well as have their sandwich featured for sale the week of April 13 from Norma’s Cafe.

“Nothing says comfort food like a warm grilled cheese sandwich, and we could all use more comfort right now,” said Ed Murph, owner of Norma’s Café. “Having celebrated this event for 11 years, we always love to see—and try—all of the delicious creations made by our customers. We are hoping that this year’s contestants will use the time they have at home to take the creativity and taste combinations to a whole new level.”

To enter, customers must use the eligible ingredients and email submissions to Events@NormasCafe.com by April 9. Norma’s Cafe will then announce the top 3 submissions for voting via their social media channels. Their team will then tally all of the votes and the winning masterpiece will be announced on April 12. The winning gourmet grilled cheese will be sold at all Norma’s locations the week of April 13 for pickup and delivery.

While Norma’s typically offers a free classic grilled cheese sandwich to all dine-in guests at its five D/FW area locations on National Grilled Cheese Day, the restaurant will be closed on April 12 in observance of the Easter holiday.

Given the timing and situation this year, Norma’s has instead decided to donate free sandwiches to its Favor Neighbor organizations to help members of the communities we serve who are most in need. Launched last week, Favor a Neighbor offers people a chance to sponsor a hot meal from Norma’s with their neighbor or neighborhood organization in need. Customers simply just need to contact Lila at Catering@NormasCafe.com with their pledged amount and Norma’s will handle the rest. Organizations that have received meals and gift cards:

  • Fire & Police Stations across DFW
  • Organizations such as City House, Genesis Women’s Shelter, Dallas 24 Hour Club, Wilkinson Center and Our Calling
  • Hospitals & Clinics including Parkland, Baylor Scott White, Plaza Medical Center, and Children’s Dallas

Norma’s is also offering an Easter Fest Package for pick up before Friday, April 10. The homemade Easter Feast includes Sliced Glazed Ham or Roasted Turkey for 8 to 10 people with two quarts of dressing; a quart each of mashed potatoes, green beans, and giblet gravy; cranberry sauce; one dozen rolls and a dozen mini carrot cake middles filled with cream cheese for $89.99. Customers can also order a la carte.

Norma’s Cafe’s 5 locations are currently open from 8 am-7:30 pm and are operating curbside pickup or delivery through Favor. They are serving their menu including all-day breakfast plus family-style meals ranging from $55.99-$59.99 for 6 people; bodega items such as bread, eggs, and toilet paper; and daily packaged produce & dinner kits.
