FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys have made a blockbuster move, waiving former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs as the team closes out its 2025 season. Diggs will go through the NFL waiver wire over the next 24 hours, and if unclaimed, he will be free to sign with any of the other 31 teams.
Drafted in the second round by Dallas in 2020 out of Alabama, Diggs made an immediate impact in the NFL, setting franchise records and emerging as the league’s interception leader in 2021. He earned two Pro Bowl selections and First-Team All-Pro honors in his first two seasons. In 2021 alone, Diggs recorded 11 interceptions for 142 yards, including two pick-sixes, and amassed 17 interceptions in his first three seasons.
Injuries, however, began to derail his trajectory. After a season-ending knee injury in 2023, Diggs struggled to regain his form in 2024 and was eventually placed on season-ending injured reserve for further knee surgery.
In 2025, he again faced setbacks, including a concussion and lingering knee issues that kept him on injured reserve for much of the second half of the season. He returned for Week 16 against the Los Angeles Chargers and played again on Christmas Day against the Washington Commanders, which would prove to be his final time suiting up for Dallas.
By parting ways with Diggs, the Cowboys avoid his 2026 $14.5 million salary, though they are still responsible for the $8.5 million guaranteed and much of the non-guaranteed money already paid in 2025. The move frees up cap space for potential free-agent signings or to re-sign players like George Pickens, Jadeveon Clowney, or Javonte Williams.
The split follows a tumultuous few years, including disagreements over Diggs’ rehabilitation, conflicts with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and head coach Brian Schottenheimer, and a controversial home concussion. With 2025 behind them, both Diggs and the Cowboys now begin new chapters apart.
