McKINNEY – McKinney National Airport will begin commercial passenger service this fall as Avelo Airlines launches nonstop flights to five destinations from the city’s newly completed passenger terminal.
Avelo announced Tuesday it will begin service Nov. 11, coinciding with the opening of the airport’s commercial terminal and its transition to a commercial service airport.
The airline will offer nonstop flights to Las Vegas and four Florida destinations: Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa. Flights are scheduled to operate Wednesdays through Mondays, providing travelers with service during the Veterans Day holiday period and beyond.
The announcement marks the first scheduled commercial passenger service in the airport’s history and represents a significant milestone for McKinney as North Texas continues to experience rapid population and economic growth.
Mayor Bill Cox said the addition of commercial air service will provide residents and businesses with a more convenient travel option while supporting the city’s continued development.
“The City of McKinney welcomes Avelo Airlines and the exciting new nonstop service it will provide from McKinney National Airport,” Cox said in a statement. “As growth continues to reshape North Texas, McKinney is playing an increasingly important role in the region’s future.”
Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy said the carrier selected McKinney because of growing demand for convenient air travel and the advantages offered by a smaller airport.
The airline also announced plans to base two aircraft at McKinney National Airport, an investment expected to create more than 100 jobs in the region. Company officials said the move reflects Avelo’s long-term commitment to expanding its presence in North Texas.
Avelo, which is headquartered in Houston, said its McKinney operation will provide travelers with low-fare, nonstop service to popular leisure destinations while helping stimulate economic development in the area.
McKinney National Airport has undergone significant expansion in preparation for commercial service, including construction of a new passenger terminal designed to accommodate scheduled airline operations. The airport has historically served general aviation and corporate aircraft but is now positioning itself as an additional commercial travel option for residents of Collin County and the surrounding region.
Tickets for the new routes are now available through Avelo Airlines.
