Black history spotlight for Oct. 3: Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole was born Nathaniel Adams Coles on March 17, 1919. He was an American musician, who had his start as a leading jazz pianist. On Oct. 3, 1956, Cole became the first black performer to host his own TV show. He was one of the first black Americans to host a television variety show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death.

The daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole, Natalie Maria Cole, carried on her father’s success and legend. In the 1990s, she re-recorded standards by her father, resulting in her biggest success, Unforgettable… with Love, which sold over seven million copies and also won Cole numerous Grammy Awards.
