Dallas DA warns stores regarding organized retail crime ring using fake traveler’s cheques

dallasDALLAS – An organized retail crime ring is responsible for using counterfeit traveler’s cheques in North Texas to make off with more than $100,000 in stolen goods. There have been two arrests in Dallas and eight arrests nationwide.

This is the first time the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office has encountered a counterfeit ring involving traveler’s cheques. “We’ve never seen a scam like this. Several individuals would fly to the North Texas area from various states to buy merchandise, and then they would fly to different cities acting as tourists to return the goods to the same store to get cash. We need local stores to contact us if they suspect that they have fallen victim to this scheme,” said District Attorney Craig Watkins.

There are members of the retail ring who have not been apprehended, so retailers should be on alert. More than two dozen retail stores in North Texas have been hit.
