Coppell Mayor’s murder-suicide stuns community

By Ruth Ferguson

The Dallas medical examiner’s preliminary report on Wednesday indicates Coppell Mayor Jayne Peters, 55, shot and killed her 19-year-old daughter and then fatally shot herself in the head.

Their bodies were discovered in their home Tuesday night. City spokeswoman Sharon Logan reported there was no sign of forced entry at their home located at 700 block of Greenway Drive.

Peters was appointed the mayor of Coppell in May 2009, but had served on the city council since 1998. Professionally she was a contract software developer.

When Peters did not arrive at a regularly scheduled city council meeting on Tuesday night, the city manager requested the police visit her home where they discovered the bodies.

In a press release the city stated, “The Coppell Police Department’s investigation is still on-going and will not be completed until any/all investigative leads have been exhausted.”
