Mother, daughter of former Dallas mayor pro tem protest sentence

(NDG Wire) Mary Hill and Sherrica Farrington, mother and daughter of Don and Sheila Hill, launched a petition drive during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade on Jan. 17 to protest what they call excessive sentences on the Hills.

Mary Hill, 85-year-old mother of the former Dallas mayor pro tem, and Farrington, the Hills’ 17-year-old daughter, hope to attain at least 5,000 signatures over the next 20-plus days to send to United States Attorney General Eric Holder asking him to investigate the sentencing of the Hills. Mary Hill and Farrington contend the Hills’ sentences are too harsh, in light of the slap-on-the-wrist punishment received by housing developers Brian and Cheryl Potashnik and former U.S. House of Representative Tom DeLay.

On Jan. 10, DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison for his part in a scheme to illegally channel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.

On Dec. 17, 2010, Brian Potashnik was ordered to serve 14 months in prison, while Cheryl Potashnik received two years probation.

Don Hill was indicted and found guilty on various counts including bribery, extortion, wire fraud and money laundering along with his wife, Shelia Hill, DeAngelo Lee, Darren Reagan and Ricky Robertson.

Don Hill received an 18-year sentence and is serving his time in a federal prison in Ashland, Ky., while his wife received a nine-year sentence. She is in a Marianna, Fla., prison.
