North Texas unclaimed property list coming Sunday

(NDG Wire) – One in four Texans has missing money waiting to be claimed from the state’s unclaimed property fund.  Are you the one?

Folks in the North Texas region have a chance to check the annual Unclaimed Property List in regional newspapers on Sunday, Feb. 13.  Every person and business on the list has at least $250 they can claim, or abandoned stock certificates or safe deposit box contents of unknown value.

“This is an opportunity to get money back from the state government,” said Texas Comptroller Susan Combs. “It’s yours – claim it.”

Combs returned more than $163 million to its owners in fiscal 2010, a $16 million increase compared to 2009.

The North Texas Unclaimed Property List will appear in The Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. It will include names of unclaimed property owners in 50 counties stretching from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to Texarkana.

“Even if you don’t find your name on the newspaper list, the publication should serve as a reminder to check the Unclaimed Property website at www.ClaimItTexas.org,” Combs said.  “In our online database, you can find any amount of unclaimed property, large or small, from any year.”

The state is holding about $2.2 billion in unclaimed property, a total that will keep growing as long as Texans keep forgetting about old bank accounts and safe deposit boxes, utility deposits, insurance policies, uncashed checks, unclaimed wages and other money that is eventually turned over to the state.
