David Satcher, born on March 2, 1941 in Alabama, is a man of extraordinary feat. He graduated from Morehouse College of Atlanta in Georgia, 1963. He served as the 16th Surgeon General of the US from 1998-2002. Dr. Satcher was also was an Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services in 1998-2001. He was the second person in history to hold the two positions of Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health at the same time.
On August 20, 1993-1998, Dr. Satcher became Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Administrator of the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. He was the first person to serve these two positions at the same time.
Dr. Satcher has also held various other leadership positions at the Charles R. Drew University for Medicine and Science, Meharry Medical College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. He was a Macy Foundation Fellow, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar, and a Senior Visiting Fellow of the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Dr. Satcher was also Director of the new National Center for Primary Care (NCPC) at the Morehouse School of Medicine from 2002 to 2004. He is concentrated on issues of mental health and the well-being of people.
Dr. Satcher has received more than 40 degrees of honor, including distinguished honors such as top awards from the National Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Ronald Davis Special Recognition Award from the American College of Preventive Medicine and the Symbol of H.O.P.E. Award.
David Satcher, MD, PhD is currently Director of The Satcher Health Leadership Institute, established in 2006 at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, and he serves on a number of Board of Directors- Johnson and Johnson, MetLife, and the Kaiser Family Foundation.
As a runner, rower, and gardener himself, Dr. Satcher is a big believer in healthy lifestyles.
