Dispute delays El Paso burial of Sherman Hemsley aka”George Jefferson”

Sherman Hemsley best known for his role as George Jefferson on 1970s sitcom The Jeffersons has not been laid to peace yet. There is a dispute over his will and his remains. His “beloved partner”, Flora Echinton is listed as the sole beneficiary of Hemsley’s $50,000 estate. However, a man who claims to be Hemsley’s brother, Richard Thornton, has come forth to claim the will for himself.

There is a court hearing set for today, Sept. 24.

“”I have never heard of a so-called brother named Richard Thornton,” Enchinton said.

Reached by phone, Thornton said he had no comment. His attorney did not return phone calls. In court documents, he’s asking for the estate valued at over $50,000, as well as the actor’s remains.

Hemsley’s body remains in cold storage at an El Paso funeral home while a probate court decides what happens next. A hearing is set for September 24.”
