The Richardson Police Department recently shared a crime tip to remind drivers to make sure you are ready for bad traffic or weather by keeping plenty of gas in your vehicle. They suggest you always keep your gas tank at least half full and your vehicle in good repair in expectation of the unexpected.
Foul weather, traffic delays and detours, or simply getting lost can result in unanticipated fuel consumption. A tank of fuel not only allows for better traction on slippery roads, but it can keep the heater running in frigid weather and lights on at night should you run off the road. An empty tank or mechanical break-down can leave you all alone and in dire straits.
Running out of gas can put you in danger when standing on the side of the road. All too often we hear news stories of a stranded motorist – or a Good Samaritan – struck by another vehicle. Also, it can be dangerous if you have to walk a great distance to the nearest gas station.
So yes even when it is cold or rainy go ahead and stop and put gas in your tank to avoid being stuck out. When I first started driving, I was given good advice – not saying I follow it – but to always keep at least a half tank of gas in your car because your car runs better.
