Sorority to present young ladies and gentlemen to society

Tau Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will host its 19th annual Pearls & Onyx Scholarship Cotillion on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at the Dallas Addison Marriott Quorum.  The theme for the cotillion is, These are the Best of Times: Appreciate the Past, Celebrate the Present, and Look to the Future.

The Pearls & Onyx Scholarship Cotillion honors the tradition of recognizing high school graduation as the beginning of the journey into adulthood for young men and women, and provides the opportunity for students to be formally presented to society. The members of Tau Rho Omega Chapter are committed to providing an avenue through which young ladies and gentlemen are enabled to enter this journey into adulthood with poise, confidence, style and grace.

Ten outstanding high school seniors, representing schools throughout the Metroplex, will be presented at the cotillion. These dynamic students are: Andre Brown – Prestonwood Christian Academy (Plano); Byron Harris – Newman Smith High School (Carrollton); Devan Butler – Richardson High School; Jessica Hayden – Berkner High School (Richardson); Aloria Prince – Edward Marcus High School (Flower Mound); Trakessa Jackson – Frisco Centennial High School; Aminika Glasco – Cedar Hill Collegiate High School; Brandi Gibson – Frisco High School;  Myesha Taylor – Denton High School and Isis Washington – Heritage High School (Frisco).

For the past twelve weeks, participants, their escorts and parents have been busy preparing for the grand evening as they learned routines from choreographer, Ms. Nycole Ray, Artistic Director of Dallas Black Dance Theatre II.  In addition to their dance practices, the young ladies and gentlemen were given an opportunity to participate in the following activities with members of Tau Rho Omega Chapter and guest speakers: an etiquette luncheon and workshop; the Carrollton Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade; the Community-Wide Dr. King Program in Flower Mound; a Roadmap to College seminar and two service projects at the Metrocrest Social Services in Carrollton.  The participants had an essay contest with the theme, “If I Could Turn Back the Time”, and the winner’s essay will be read at the cotillion and the debutante or beau will be awarded an additional scholarship.

Masters of Ceremonies for the evening will be Judge Phyllis Lister Brown, 162nd Civil District Court and Mr. Dale Long, National Chairman of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated’s partnership with Big Brothers and Sisters of America.  Tau Rho Omega Chapter members co-chairing the cotillion are Mrs. Kathy Joubert and Mrs. Gabriella Williams.
