In 2009 the United Nations General Assembly unanimously designated July 18 (Nelson Mandela’s birthday) as Nelson Mandela International Day. Its purpose is as an annual call to action to people everywhere to contribute to the global movement for good by affecting change within their communities.

Nelson Mandela International Day is recognized and supported by the U.S. Department of State. The Honorable Ebrahim Rasool, South African Ambassador to the U.S., has appointed the Honorable Helen Giddings, Honorary Consul of South Africa (and Texas State Representative) as the official representative of South Africa regarding Nelson Mandela International Day activities and events in Texas.

On July 18, volunteers across North Texas are being asked to provide 67 minutes of public service in honor of the 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity –as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. These service hours may be provided to an organization of choice. It is hoped that the organizations selected will be consistent with President Mandela’s areas of focus. This day of service will be culminated with a celebration of Mandela’s life and accomplishments at the Hall of State/Fair Park, from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday July 18 and is open to everyone.
