Letter to the Editor: Is Wendy Davis taking Black and Brown voters for granted?

wendy davisBy Anthony Bond

Let me start by saying I support Wendy Davis for Governor. But, right now I feel totally disrespected by the Wendy Davis campaign.

The day she stood for hours on the floor of the State Senate in Austin and filibustered for a just cause that she and many Texans believed in, I instantly became a fan. I immediately reached out to her office in Austin and encouraged her to run for Governor, but got no response. I continued to call and email her various offices before she announced she was running, and many times after too — again with no response.

I let her know in my messages that I am the Founder and Past President of the Irving NAACP and currently am a very active community activist that has worked with many others here in Irving. I shared that I have helped to put together a very diverse and active political coalition that represents thousands of voters here in Irving. But again, still got no response from the Wendy Davis Campaign.

As a Black voter, I am dismayed that even Wendy Davis, my grassroots heroine, is apparently like most politicians lately who take the Black and Brown vote for granted just because they are a Democrat. Now on the other hand, I have been receiving request after request incessantly to monetarily contribute to the Wendy Davis Campaign. Com’on Wendy!

I reached out to someone I know in Plano that finally gave me a name of a person who supposedly was working for the Wendy Davis Campaign in Irving. After several attempts to text, call and email this person, I finally spoke to her and was told she does not handle Irving and that someone who covers Irving would call me. That person finally did leave me a voice message saying that he understood that I would be walking a neighborhood in Irving for Wendy. What? I have never even talked to anyone about how I may be able to help the Wendy Davis Campaign. And that is exactly why I feel totally disrespected and severely disappointed in Wendy Davis.

My question to her is: If you treat your ardent supporters, like me, like this, how do you believe you can win because many who you disrespect will not vote for you?
