“We all want what’s best for our kids, and we want a school district we can be proud of,” said Lakashia Wallace, a TOP leader and DISD parent who previously served on the School Board President’s Discipline Task Force. “That’s why TOP has been working to end the school to prison pipeline that affects so many young men and women of color and why we are presently surveying members of the community to find out what other reforms people want to see in our public schools.”
“TOP is for changing the status quo in DISD, but we also don’t want to see a Home Rule charter process that is rushed and lacks input from the entire community – we have a lot of questions about this effort, which is why we are inviting the folks from SOPS to attend and answer questions,” Wallace said.
TOP represents more than 8,000 families within DISD. These parents, grandparents, and community members have successfully pushed for policy changes in DISD to curb the pipeline to prison. TOP parents have also fought for more slots for early childhood education, adequate school funding, and in Garland ISD, fair treatment of immigrant teachers. TOP will run an aggressive and comprehensive Get Out the Vote (GOTV) program for this November’s election that will include 80,000 Dallas-area voters for whom education is a priority issue.
