Learn about the science of beer at Eastfield College on Wednesday

beerMESQUITE — Barley, hops, water and yeast are the basic ingredients in beer.  But mixing up a batch of your favorite brew also involves a whole lot of science – geology, biology, chemistry, engineering and mathematics, to be exact.

On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Eastfield College will host a presentation by Shannon Cooper, owner and brewmaster of Shannon Brewing Company in Keller, on “The Science of Beer.”  The event, which will kick off the college’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Seminar Series for the spring semester, will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in S-100/100.

The second STEMinar, which is set for Thursday, February 26, at 1 p.m. in S-100/101, will feature Dr. Yong Tao, an engineering professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering at the University of North Texas, discussing the Zero Net Energy Lab at UNT.  The lab, which is the only one of its kind in Texas, is designed to test various energy technologies in order to achieve a net-zero consumption of energy. The 1,200-square-foot facility features green building technologies including solar, geothermal and wind systems.

Other upcoming STEMinars include:

  •         March 2-6, STEM Week events, G-101/102, times TBA
  •         April 9, Cryptography, 2 p.m.
  •         April 21, Computer Security and Social Media, 11 a.m.
