For the third consecutive year, the Dallas County Community College District has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association, a professional organization that encourages state and local governments to exceed minimum accounting requirements.

The GFOA honored DCCCD for its fiscal year 2014 financial reporting, which ended last Aug. 31. Financial reports are examined by GFOA public sector accounting experts, auditors and other finance professionals, who certify that the information submitted satisfies the goals of the association.

Earning the certificate is a major accomplishment for DCCCD and its business practices, according to Ed DesPlas, the district’s executive vice chancellor for business affairs.

“The GFOA Certificate of Excellence is a measure of DCCCD’s commitment to the spirit of transparency and full disclosure,” said DesPlas. “Our aim is to make our comprehensive annual financial reports as readable and clear as possible. It’s good to be recognized for that.”

The reports must be submitted by governments and governmental agencies within six months after the fiscal year has ended. The GFOA reviews the reports, and the results are published four to six months later.

The GFOA represents nearly 18,000 federal, state and local government officials who work in planning and financing within their jurisdictions. It is headquartered in Chicago, Ill., and has offices in Washington, D.C.
