City of Lewisville has issued a request for the public’s help in locating children that were seen playing with a bat that has tested positive for rabies.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, between 10 and 11 a.m., a group of children was spotted playing with a live bat at the Lake Park Ballfields, roughly between fields 7 and 8. The children were gone before Animal Services arrived at the scene. The bat has tested positive for rabies.
These is no reason to expect a widespread appearance of rabies, however it is extremely important that anyone exposed be identified and examined right away.
If you know of a child who fits this description, please contact Ethel at Animal Services right away at 972-219-3478. It can be difficult to know if you have been scratched or bitten by a bat, so please do not assess the situation yourself – let trained experts do that for you.
It is very important that if you see a bat, do not approach or handle it as they can be carriers of several infectious diseases.
