AUSTIN, TEXAS –  On Tuesday, Oct. 13 members of Workers Defense Project were in Houston to ask Gov. Abbot to stop playing politics with the lives of immigrant families.

The governor was on a tour of Texas to listen to residents about the issues facing them. His talk took place at the Café Adobe in Houston.

Maria Duque, a member of Workers Defense Project and a mother of two, waited nearly two hours to speak with Gov. Abbot about his opposition to immigration. But Maria was only able to say her name and that she was a member of the immigrant community before she was interrupted.

According to Duque, the governor simply said, “Buenos dias. Adios” and then she was removed from the chair where she sat next to the governor.

Had she been allowed to speak with him, Duque would have asked him to meet with her and other families who desperately need immigration relief.

“How can he make good policy if he won’t even meet with the community to understand what we are going through?” Duque said.

As attorney general, Gov. Abbot led the 26-state lawsuit against President Obama’s executive action expanding DACA and DAPA to an estimated 5 million people across the country.

In Texas,  roughly 750,000 people would benefit under the DACA and DAPA programs.

  1. These illegal aliens have turned brazen and need to be deported ASAP. No longer are they asked to assimilate but everyone has to accommodate THEM. Stop the madness…deport all illegals and make them come in and get work permits for 10 months per year MAX. They MUST leave for at least 60 days every year. Common sense solutions.
