Earlier this fall the North Dallas Gazette’s cover story spotlighted Terry Meza’s attempt to turn Texas House District 105 from a Republican stronghold to a Democratic seat. Before the bottom fell out nationally, it seemed like a very realistic possibility. However, two weeks after the election, the contest has not been officially decided, in fact it is headed for a recount.
After the final count of the provisional ballots on Monday, Rep. Rodney Anderson holds a 64 vote lead. Meza petitioned and was granted by the Secretary of State a recount. It is scheduled to happen on Nov. 28.
“I’m cautiously optimistic and just feel like we owe it to the voters when we say, ‘Every vote counts,'” Meza told Texas Tribune on Monday.
In the campaign for District 105, Anderson, a title insurance executive, touted his accessibility to constituents and support of law enforcement. He also supported suspending controversial STAAR testing in schools. Meza criticized Anderson’s acceptance of campaign contributions from a payday lender and said he and other lawmakers haven’t done enough to reform the beleaguered Child Protective Services.
