U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will speak at UTA Dec. 13

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer will address the audience at The University of Texas at Arlington Maverick Speakers Series Special Edition at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Texas Hall, 701 W. Nedderman Drive.

The lecture will focus on his new book, “ The Court and the World: American Law and the New Global Realities, ” which examines the reason an increasingly globalized world obliges the court to consider circumstances beyond American borders.

Students, faculty and staff may reserve up to two complimentary tickets (must claim by Dec. 9 while supplies last). General admission is $5. Preferred tickets are $35 and include reserved seating near the front of the venue and a parking pass. Seemap of the campus .

A dinner package also is available for the event. Dinner package holders are offered reserved seating near the front of the venue, a parking pass, and entry to a dinner. Books may be purchased in the Texas Hall foyer on the evening of the event, while supplies last. Cash, personal checks, and debit/credit cards will be accepted. A book signing will be available for a very limited time after the lecture.

Associate Justice Breyer is a graduate of Stanford University, Oxford University, and Harvard Law School.  He taught law for many years as a professor at Harvard Law School and at the Kennedy School of Government. He also served as a Supreme Court law clerk for Justice Arthur Goldberg, a Justice Department lawyer in the antitrust division, an assistant Watergate special prosecutor, and chief counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he worked closely with Senator Edward M. Kennedy to pass the Airline Deregulation Act. In 1980, he was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit by President Jimmy Carter, and became chief judge in 1990. Four years later, Breyer was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton.

Associate Justice Breyer has written books and articles about administrative law, economic regulation, and constitutional law, including Regulation and Its Reform , Breaking the Vicious Circle: Toward Effective Risk Regulation , Active Liberty , Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View , and The Court and the World , which was published in 2015. His wife, Joanna, was born in Great Britain and is a retired clinical psychologist. They have three children and five grandchildren.

 

Texas Hall Purse and Bag Policy

Attendees to the event will be subject to a metal detector screening upon entering Texas Hall. A no purse and bag policy will be implemented in an effort to enhance public safety.
