Joshua Brown, who provided emotional testimony during Amber Guyger’s murder trial, was reportedly shot and killed on Friday night in Dallas. The police have not confirmed this report, but the attorney for the family of Botham Jean stated Brown’s mother confirmed to him.
Initial reports from the Dallas Police Department on Saturday morning indicated that at around 10:35 p.m. they responded to a shooting call in the 4600 block of Cedar Springs Road. The black male victim was 37 years old, according to their report. Following his arrival at Parkland Hospital, he was pronounced dead. They did not notify the next of kin because the victim did not have any identification the police reported stated.
Early Saturday evening, rumors begin to spread via social media that the victim was Brown. Lee Merritt, one of the attorney’s representing the Jean family, said via his Facebook page Brown’s mother had confirmed the death of her son. Different reports are floating on the gunshot wounds Brown suffered.
According to Merritt’s Facebook post, “He was ambushed at his apartment complex as he got out of his car and shot at close range.”
The police report states witnesses flagged officers down and indicated that after hearing several gunshots, they saw a silver four-door sedan speeding out of the parking lot.
Brown, who lived across the hall from Jean, testified the two met for the first time earlier in the day on September 6, 2018. His testimony disputed Guyger’s claim that she shouted warnings to Jean before fatally shooting him.
“A former athlete turned entrepreneur— Brown lived in constant fear that he could be the next victim of gun violence, either state sanctioned or otherwise,” Merritt wrote. “We have more work to do deal with the constant threats to our community both from within and without.”
