Garland, TX – Garland Symphony continues its 2015-2016 “Symphonic Treasures!” on November 20, 2015 at 8:00PM at the Granville Arts Center, Garland, TX. This concert features cellist Kalin Ivanov performing Sowash’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in A Major.
As our Season continues, the Garland Symphony Orchestra will explore masterpieces inspired by visions of riches. From Auber’s Overture to The Crown Diamonds to Lehar’s Gold and Silver Waltz, it promises to be a glittering array of musical treasures. Along the way, the GSO’s ninety-three sparkling musicians will bring you music from Shostakovich’s Age of Gold Suite, Wolf-Ferrari’s Jewels of the Madonna, Wagner’s The Rheingold, and many more symphonic gems.
A native of Bulgaria, Kalin began studying cello at age of six with his father. Mr. Ivanov holds Master of Music degree from Brooklyn College Conservatory, where he studied cello with Marion Feldman. He has participated in master classes given by distinguished cellists such as: David Soyer, Nathaniel Rosen, Steven Doane, Laurence Lesser, Anatoli Krastev and others. In 1999 Mr. Ivanov won the C.W. Post Chamber Music Festival Concerto Competition. Ivanov’s young career of charismatic performances led him from the concert halls of Bulgaria to Greece, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Russia, Czech Republic, and of course the United States, including recent appearances as soloist with Plovdiv Philharmonic, Bulgarian Virtuosi Orchestra, Pazardjik Symphony, Moscow Chamber Orchestra “Cantus Firmus”, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, Academy Chamber Orchestra, Manhattan Virtuosi Orchestra, and Ensemble Du Monde Orchestra, among others. Mr. Ivanov is a founding member of The Forte String Quartet, New York Classic Trio, New York Empire Trio, Duo “BG,” and Bulgarian Piano Quartet. He is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Award and Cultural Achievement Award for teaching and performing in the U.S., as well as a career development grant by the Artist Fund of the New York Foundation for the Arts.
The GSO will be joined by guest conductor Maciej Zoltowski (b. 1971 in Warsaw) is well known for his devotion to music of the 20th and 20st centuries. Being himself a composer, he developed strong links with the contemporary music scene as well as with the best soloists of our times. His thorough and diversified knowledge allows him an unprecedented insight into the music he conducts. He belongs to the most versatile and visionary conductors of his generation.
Maestro Zoltowski collaborates with many Polish philharmonic orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio (Katowice), the Polish Radio Orchestra (Warsaw), the Polish Orchestra Jeunesses Musicales and the Beethoven Academy Orchestra. Maciej Zoltowski studied violin at the F. Chopin and J. Elsner Music Schools in Warsaw. Having earned his diploma in violin performance with distinction, he continued his studies at the F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he graduated in 1996 in composition and in 1997 in conducting faculty, obtaining both M.A. diplomas with awards. His teachers at the academy included Prof. Marian Borkowski and Prof. Ryszard Dudek.
In addition to Mr. Ivanov’s solo performances, the GSO will also feature Mozart’s Overture to Cozi fan tutti, Wolf-Ferrari’s Intermezzo No. 2 from The Jewels of the Madonna, Haydn’s Symphony No. 86 in D Major, and selections from Paderewski’s Tatra Album.
Garland Symphony Orchestra credits its Music Director, Robert Carter Austin for its continued outstanding and diverse orchestral programming. Maestro Austin’s background encompasses over 30 years of professional music experience and includes degrees from MIT, Cambridge University, and Stanford University. Maestro Austin’s musical experience includes conducting performances in countries including: Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Italy, Spain, China, France, Germany, Mexico, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Colombia, Philippines, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and the United States.
