The media wolves are at Tiger’s door

When Tiger Woods married Ellin Nordegren five years ago, there was concern the marriage might make the game’s greatest golfer lose his competitive edge. That did not happen, Woods is still the game’s greatest golfer. However, over the past few days Woods has discovered being a married sports icon can come with a host of other issues. Last week, the National Inquirer reported Woods is involved in an extra martial affair.

In a statement Sunday on his website Woods admitted the car accident that sent him to the hospital early Friday was his fault and it was “embarrassing” to him and his family. Investigators have been to Woods’ home and came up empty handed. Police received a frantic 911 call from Woods’ neighbors and a copy of the audio was released to the press.

At a press confernece on Tuesday the Florida Highway Patrol announced Woods was issued a traffic citation for careless driving with a maximum fine of $164. Officials indicated they have no plans to pursue any criminal charges in connection with the matter.

On Sunday attorney Mark NeJame representing Woods provided the police his license, registration and insurance which was required by law. After testing revealed no alochol or drugs were involved, Woods reportedly is not required to make any further statements to authorities handling the crash investigation.

The intensively private Woods is not accustom to this type of attention. He normally controls the media’s access and manupulates how the media covers his career and limited personal information. His relationship with the media has really changed. We will see if if he can handle it.

At the very least Woods has learned two painful lessons: there is the down side of having a marriage in the spotlight and that fame is almost always give – and- take.
