Man Up Group requests community to help send teens to summer camp

Want to stand up for teens? Memorial Day weekend is the chance to do so.

On Saturday, May 28, the Man Up Group of David W. Carter High School in Dallas will hold a fundraiser to help approximately 63 young people attend a teen summer camp. The group’s students will stand up at the mural painting on the corner of Camp Wisdom and Hampton beginning at 8 a.m. and remain there until all support is accomplished. The Man Up Group also requests community leaders to stand with teens for at least one hour Saturday.

Curtis Ferguson, teacher at Carter High School, said the group is in need of financial sponsors to support the youth by investing the $175 per youth summer camp fee. Part of the camp includes a retreat to Broken Bow, Okla.

“A majority come from single-family homes,” Ferguson said. “Most of the homes are single mother or grandparents on a fixed income who desperately need assistance.”

Ferguson said individuals can help by sponsoring a teen in full, sponsoring a teen in part or by purchasing a bottle of Eddie Deen barbecue sauce for $5 per bottle or $60 per case. Each student is asked to request individuals to invest at least seven cases of sauce.

The camp, slated for June 6 through July 31, takes teens out of their “natural environment” and expose them to a “whole new world.” Ferguson said the camp includes a two-week break.

If your church, business, social organization or group would like to participate or make donations to the teens, call Ferguson at 469-337-1724. For more information, visit www.manupgroup.org.
