Stults Road Elementary once again proves that students that are economically disadvantaged will bridge the achievement gap when given the opportunity. The school was awarded the 2010 National Title 1 Distinguished School award, due largely too creative and innovative programs.
For the past six weeks, students at Stults Road Elementary ran to school every Wednesday to participate in Enrichment Clusters. The lesson plans were anything but ordinary. Students worked in a multi-age small group of 10 to 13 students on clusters that included everything from public speaking, filmmaking, weird science, poetry, and cheerleading. The teachers acted as learning guides instead of teaching at students directly. The students created products, performances, or services out of the cross-collaboration.
In accordance with the “whole child” philosophy of Stults Road Elementary, the program proved to be a huge success with students and teachers. “Not only do I learn new languages, but we get to eat food and learn about fashion from different cultures,” raved one student.
The school will host a celebration Friday, March 9th at 8:30 am. The program will include
Poetry Society ~ The Snowman’s Lament, Bringing Books to Life ~ The True Story of Humpty Dumpty, and Video Killed the Radio Star ~ Party Rock Anthem among other wonderful presentations. Stults Road Elementary is located at 8700 Stults Road in Dallas, Texas. For more information about this school can be found at www.risd.org.
