“Cease the Grease” radio-controlled monster truck to be introduced during event

Area scouts attending the annual Fish and Fun Day at the Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp in Athens on Saturday March 10 will get a special treat this year. Members of the Cedar Valley Community College Automotive Technology program will race radio-control cars powered by biodiesel from recycled cooking oil. The Cedar Valley race team with introduce the new “Cease the Grease” RC monster truck. In addition, officials with the Dallas “Cease the Grease” program will be on hand discuss the benefits of recycling used cooking oil instead of pouring down the drain.

An estimated 800 scouts and 200 parents will attend the event at the 3000 acre camp on FM 2970 in Athens. While the focus will be on fishing, the “biobot” demonstration will be held between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“We are excited to be part of this annual Scouting event,” said Helen Cantril Dulac of Dallas Water Utilities’ grease abatement program. “The race involving biodiesel powered radio controlled cars is a great way to show young people the benefits of recycling used cooking oil,” Dulac added.

The Cedar Valley Community College program teaches students how to make bio-diesel fuel by recycling household used cooking oil and converting small RC engines from nitro to bio-fuel. In addition, the students learn about clean energy and increase their environmental awareness about the effects of pouring used cooking oil down the drain.

Scouts attending the event will range in age from 6-18 years old. They will also participate in various other camp activities like, archery, fishing, bb guns, horseback riding, etc. and this annual event is also used to recruit urban youth and for scout rank advancement.
