Longtime Dallas-area pastor revered as ‘living legend’ and national leader Dr. C. C. Robertson will be funeralized in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, July 14, 2012. Dr. Robertson died on July 7, 2012 peacefully after a brief illness at the age of 86.
Funeral and memorial services will include resolutions, presentations and remarks from national religious leaders, elected officials and community leaders. Bishop Jeffery D. Thomas, Sr., pastor of Mount Rose Church in Dallas, Texas and Dr. Melvin V. Wade Sr., former president of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America and pastor of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California will share officiating duties at the funeral service. Dr. T. L. Brown, pastor of the Exciting Ervay Cedar Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas will deliver the eulogy. Dr. Brown currently serves as the General Secretary of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America.
Dr. Calvin Coolidge Robertson Sr. was born on September 4, 1925 in Calvert, Texas to parentage of the late Reverend Rolston and the Lucille Robertson and was the fourth of six children. In 1941, the Robertson family moved to Dallas, Texas where Dr. Robertson graduated from Lincoln High School. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Army where he served as a military police officer in World War II under the leadership of Gen. George Patton in Germany. Dr. Robertson laughed as he would tell the fond memory of feeling the call to preach while serving during the war with all of the bombs and things scaring him.
After serving his country, he returned to the states to attend Bishop College in Marshall, Texas on the G.I. Bill and later Morehouse College in Atlanta. Dr. Robertson married the love of his life, Doris L. Washington, who preceded him in death, on August 5, 1948. To this union four children were born: Charlotte Ann, Sherry Elaine, Calvin Jr., and Alvin Arnold (deceased).
This year marks the 57th year Dr. Robertson was in the pulpit. He was called as pastor of his first congregation in 1957, the Community Baptist Church in West Dallas. After leading Community Baptist Church for 30 years, he was called to succeed his father as pastor of Bexar Street Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas in September 1987, where he was still serving as pastor.
As a national leader, Dr. Robertson was in his second four-year term as president of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America, serving from 2006-2012. Other offices he currently held included Moderator Emeritus of the Fellowship District Association and President of the Dallas Baptist Ministers Union.
In a recent interview, Dr. Robertson was quoted as saying, “Evangelism…that’s my heart. I love to share with others what the Lord has done for me. I love seeing people give their lives to Jesus. That’s what really moves my heart.” Dr. Robertson’s favorite saying was, “I ain’t mad at nobody.”
Dr. Robertson is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Robertson Jackson and Sherry Robertson Ellison; one son, Calvin C. Robertson Jr. and one sister, Phileace Robertson Wilson all of Dallas, Texas.
