Black History Spotlight for August 13: The Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper

Founded on August 13, 1892 The Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper is a family-run newspaper serving the community for over 100 years. The newspaper was founded by John H. Murphy, Jr., a slave, and is regularly referred to as the Afro and is published weekly in Baltimore, Maryland. The current publisher of the Afro-American newspaper is John “Jake” Oliver.

The mission of the paper is to educate and empower the African American community and promote civil rights.
